Gemstones: Amethyst

To celebrate the launch of our website in February 2021, we have written our first blog post all about Amethysts! 

Amethyst is the birthstone for the month of February and is also known as a crystal of protection and healing.  

Amethyst is the purple variety of Quartz and the most highly valued stone in the Quartz group. Amethysts’ shades range from light lilac to deep purple, the presence of aluminium and iron impurities lends Amethyst its colour. 

The name Amethyst means “not drunken” in Greek, which referenced the belief that the stone would prevent drunkenness. The ancient Greeks wore amethyst and carved drinking vessels from it in the belief that it would prevent intoxication. 

The Mohs hardness scale for Amethyst is 7, making it ideal for use in jewellery and body adornment.
